The labia, or lips, of the vagina come in all different sizes and shapes. Sometimes at puberty one or both grow out of proportion to the rest of the body. They can also become elongated as a result of childbirth. Labiaplasty is a procedure designed for women who want to improve the appearance of long or oddly-shaped labia. Urogynecologist and board-certified gynecologist, Dr. Mayer, MD offers this procedure to patients in Beverly Hills, California. Women interested in labiaplasty should make an appointment for a private consultation with Dr. Mayer.

Labiaplasty Q&A

What is labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a procedure designed to restructure the labia and improve their cosmetic appearance.

How is labiaplasty performed?

Dr. Mayer performs labiaplasty procedures by removing excess tissue from the labia to reduce their size and alter their shape. Dr. Mayer performs this surgery under general anesthesia.

When is labiaplasty beneficial?

Labiaplasty is most appropriate for patients who are embarrassed by the length, size, and/or shape of their labia. Some patients also opt for this procedure because they feel discomfort when participating in certain activities, such as riding a bike.

What are the risks?

Like all other surgical procedures, labiaplasty poses some risks to the patient. Some of the risks of labiaplasty include bleeding, infection, and scarring. Some women may also experience a change in sensation in the labia following labiaplasty. However, serious complications from this procedure are rare.

Is the procedure painful?

During the labiaplasty procedure, patients will be under general anesthesia. After the procedure, patients may experience some discomfort. Dr. Mayer will prescribe an over-the-counter pain reliever or prescription pain reliever to help patients control the pain at home. Patients can also reduce pain and swelling with ice packs.

How long is the recovery?

During the first 5 days after the procedure, patients will typically need to use a pad to absorb any drainage from the surgical site. Patients will also need to wear loose clothing during this time. Women who undergo labiaplasty will need to avoid strenuous physical activity for 4 weeks after the procedure, and sexual activity should be avoided for 6 weeks.

Can Dr. Mayer perform labiaplasty on women who have already had vaginal surgeries?

In some cases, past vaginal surgeries may leave the patient with undesirable results, such as uneven labia. Dr. Mayer will use labiaplasty to improve the appearance of the labia after a failed surgery.

What other procedures can improve the structure and appearance of the vagina?

In addition to labiaplasty, Dr. Mayer also offers vaginoplasty, which tightens the interior of the vagina. Patients who are interested in both procedures may be able to combine them into one vaginal rejuvenation surgery.
